Into the mind of Nalle Hukkataival

Yesterday, this “aftermath” video of Nalle Hukkataival’s historic ascent of “Burden of Dreams” was making cycles around the web.

Somehow, I found this video more engaging that the original ascent video which by the way is very good…

Originally this struck me as odd, but then I remembered that sometimes ago I wrote this. Admittidley I never got to finish Part II where I was planning to describe “the different climbing film” but it seems like some people were having the same thoughts with me.

Nalle’s latest video (even though it’s just a short interview) is somehow speaking more about those raw (and often dark) emotions rather than the glorification of a climbing heroic ascent.

As I grow older I find such psychological aspects of climbing way more intriguing that the simplistic ascent stories. Wouldn’t be really interesting if a film looked into the cognitive mechanisms through which climbing shapes us at personal and interpersonal level? Asking questions about how climbng shapes ourselves and our interrelationships? Questions about what kind of people we are in the first place to be attracted by climbing and what kind of people we are becoming  through constant abrasion with the rock?

Having read past interviews of Nalle Hukkataival and watching this video, the guy seems like a really interesting figure. He seems unafraid to speak about deeper sentiments and feelings, to expose that unpolished side of self, that dedication edging on the dark corners of obsession when it comes to super hard moves.

There is really so much there to explore…But then you know what they say about staring into the Abyss…
